It’s a Takis-copycat-off! Today’s is Trader Joe’s “Takis”, the next review is Doritos #Dinamita Chili Limon!
And well, it’s happened - this was a #TraderJoes chip I actually really enjoyed. I usually prefer their sweet snacks (god-tier cookies and cookie selection/innovation), so I did go into this one skeptical. But I was happy to be proven wrong! At first I was like “Hah, Trader Joe’s #Takis? An attempt at creating a healthier, yuppie version of a beloved Mexican junk food? Yeah, right.” But turns out they put effort into creating a very similar Takis - with their signature cleaner taste, of course - but it was quite punchy and not bland at all. * Insert Kris Jenner you’re doing amazing sweetie meme.
The rolled corn is dense, firm, and pretty hard, but still broke decently with a satisfying crunch. The roll is 3in. long of medium thickness tortilla chip, and has some detectable corn taste. There are visible grill marks, but no strong grill flavor. You’d really have to search far and wide for a tiny tiny bit of smoke/grill flavor, but it is (kind of) there. The chili and lime tho! Super strong flavors, actually spicy from the chili, actually citrusy and tart from the lime! The lime is immediately a punch to the gut, then the #chili sets your mouth on fire. Both in a good way of course, neither makes this snack inedible at all. It’s just at the brink of awesome, but not too-too much. I also liked how they used no artificial coloring in this, unlike *SPOILER ALERT* Doritos Dinamita Chili Limon (and Takis). I still prefer Takis slightly rougher texture, better crunch break, and stronger grill flavor, but these are quite good. - 📍@traderjoes, Hollywood California
