Like most things at Trader Joe's, you go in with blind bliss as you think to yourself “Such a fun store! Look at all this cool stuff with fun names and packaging, everything is so cheap and healthy!” While good in isolation, you soon realize that compared to other products, most of TJ’s offerings are just ok, lots of duds, an occasional hit, but above all: off-brand.
TJ’s version of Doritos are these and they are decent at first taste. They have a rustic texture (which is good for someone who likes seedy bread) from “stone ground white and yellow corn”. The chip is slightly thinner than most tortilla chips and it’s coated lightly in their “cheddar cheese” flavor powder. The flavor powder is powdery, so the chips are pretty unevenly coated, not only from chip to chip but also on the same chip! The flavor powder to me is the most off putting, it tastes like a mildly zesty dehydrated artificial orange cheese - very similar to eating the cheese powder packet in Kraft Mac&Cheese boxes.

So what’s going on with this chip? Here are its highly scientific stats:
Saltiness: LOW-MEDIUM
Flavor level: LOW-MEDIUM
Thickness: THIN-MEDIUM
Opinion ratings (1-10):
Crunch: 5.5
Texture: 6.1
Flavor: 3.4
Overall: 4.5
Again, in isolation these are probably acceptable if you’re in Plato’s cave/only shop at Trader Joe’s. If you’ve had Doritos recently, you’ll start seeing through the composition of this chip. At the end of the day, you’ll see it for what it is: a slightly strange off-brand Dorito.
