Ventured into the grocery store equivalent of Plato’s cave again, this time for these #Elote Corn Chips I’ve seen all over Instagram!
First on the chip itself. It’s a larger corn chip 1.5-2in. in length and 1.5in. in width, and does generally have an elongated shape with concave indentation for dipping. The chip is also fairly thick but not too hard, so I think they did a good job at constructing a chip shape for dipping. The texture started out weird but did get oddly addicting, I’d describe it like a styrofoam-y, less-textured Frito.
While the chip is acceptable, I really did not like the elote flavor. And this is from someone who loves elote flavors! There’s an immediate off putting smell and taste of...something I’d only describe as somewhat tart dehydrated buttermilk flavoring. Ick. It’s hard to describe because it’s not a very common taste, but if you’ve ever had powdered creamer for coffee, you know the artificial taste of the dehydrated milk? It’s like a tangy version of that. The other spices were just fine, but I don’t know if any of the flavoring was necessary for a dipping chip other than being a signature Trader Joe’s decision for a newness over quality. - 📍@traderjoes, Hollywood
So what’s going on with this chip? Here are its highly scientific stats:
Saltiness: MEDIUM-HIGH
Flavor level: MEDIUM-HIGH
Thickness: THICK
Opinion ratings (1-10):
Crunch: 5.7
Texture: 5.5
Flavor: 4.0
Overall: 4.3
If they just made this a boring salted corn dipping chip, I think it would’ve been a better product. But they have to keep things fresh over there, so here’s to another #TraderJoes gimmick! I also don’t know what dip, if any, would be good with this oddly flavored chip.
