Been a while since my last chip from Japan, and I had no idea what this chip is at first. I could tell from the aggressive #Japanese graphic design that itâs DESU BOLD-DUH FLAVOR-U, but I relied on Googling âspicy japanese chipâ to find out what these were. Turns out these are from #Koikeya, and were the very first spicy chip that hit Japan in the 80s! So it has an iconic and modern-snack-history factor to it, which I always love. Even if itâs not the boldest flavoring by todayâs standards, I was into it.
The chip, like other Koikeya chips, are in more of the processed style. What that means is every chip has an incredibly consistent smooth texture, uniform thin chip thickness, zero folded #chips, and every single disk has the same crunch/feel. It kind of grew on me as I was eating it too! The first few chips I felt like the texture was so smooth that it was on the boring side with no fun or hard crunch break, but as I went I realized this is so you can eat A LOT of them. And of course, to be a carrier for the mild spicy flavor. This chip does have the slight spiciness, but is really not a spicy-spicy chip. Itâs kind of perfect for if youâre a person who likes spicy flavors but has a very low tolerance. I still canât really figure out exactly what the flavor is - the obvious one is the spicy pepper blend, but there is also a definite and detectable background of some kind of meat flavoring (Iâm guessing chicken). All together, the flavor has the signature instant ramen-esque #umami/MSG seasoning of all #Japanesechips. -đ@99ranchmarket, Irvine
