DUDE. BEST. TORTILLA. CHIP. EVER. I actually didn’t have a strong favorite before, my favorite store bought was #ArboledaFoods (a local Los Angeles chip maker with an 8.0 rating), and in general I like Chipotle’s chips, Cabo Chips, and Have’a Chips - but these blow all of those out of the water. This is the most enthusiastic I’ve ever felt about a packaged tortilla chip, and is now definitively my favorite. First off, it was barely packaged tasting. If I got these at a restaurant and they were slightly warm, I wouldn’t even question them to not be a freshly made/fried in-house chip. The crunch is amazing, the texture, the thickness, the Himalayan Pink Salt, the tiniest hint of lime just to round out the flavor by cutting the fry ever so slightly - all incredible. So so delicious. The salt has a fragrant, slightly earthy, full taste. The chip has has a white corn base where you can actually taste very detectable corn flavor, but the chip is finely milled so it still has a smooth and wonderful texture/crunch. Soybean oil is the last ingredient, you can’t really taste this but the oil quality is great enough where you can’t detect it.
Chipz Happens is a family owned/operated chip maker in San Diego ☀️🌴. I actually spent my formative teenage years in San Diego, and there’s a specific style of Mexican food there that these #tortillachips are in line with. It’s slightly different from everywhere else I’ve had #Mexicanfood, even in LA. I’d say San Diego style Mexican food is more gringo (aka non-Mexican), but in a good way. The emphasis is on fresh ingredients and cleaner/brighter tasting food that’s less oily or stewed. But trust me, this is a very good thing, but it’s just a different style of #Mexicanfood. If you want the heavier, complex flavors of a stewed offal meat Mexican food, that’s not San Diego style. If you want grilled and fresh Mexican food with a lot of bright flavors and high quality produce, that’s #SanDiego Mexican food. Basically, these don’t taste “dirty”. The chip fry is really clean, it’s not very greasy at all, and everything has a really bright and delicious flavor. The chip is also thinner (not super thin, just thinner than many local tortilla chip options) for a lighter and better crunch with way more air bubbles. Delicious! I’d recommend these to everyone, @chipzhappen, you guys are making a bomb ass product. - 📍 Thank you to Chipz Happen for sending these to me!! You can get these on their site: http://chipzhappen.com/ and local Southern California markets.
