Man, the #nostalgia I got from this snack! My review of this is totally and definitely biased because I grew up eating these, so I would completely understand if someone who didn’t wouldn’t be as into them. However, there is something to be said about the iconicness and longevity of this #snack, which I don’t think is unearned. This is one of the most commonly seen #AsianSnacks out there for a while now, and has a pretty wide distribution in the US even outside of Asian markets. It’s the classic shrimp chip from #Calbee!
The snack is a medium dense on the outside, airy and crunchy on the inside of the ridged wheat puff. There’s no crust on these per se, but the outer texture is smooth and flat, whereas the inside has more of the puffed texture with small air bubbles. The snack is also baked and is not greasy, and the ridges are very shallow so it only holds the perfect amount of seasoning. The flavor of the seasoning is so subtle and light handed, but it’s not a bland chip. It has a light shrimp flavor (not too seafood-y), salt, and MSG. I actually tried Calbee’s shrimp flavored #potatochips before, and felt like the shrimp flavor for those were nowhere near as elegant as this one. This has the classic eastern #Asian flavor preference of light but flavorful, and this snack embodies that. - 📍Nijiya Market, West LA
